In early June this year, the charity received an appeal from Mount Stewart School in Kenton for help with playground equipment for the children in the special needs unit. They desperately needed some pictorial communication boards to be installed around the playground. When we went to visit the school, the Head Teacher explained that these boards are visual tools that use images, symbols, or photos to represent words, actions, or concepts. These enable children who are non-verbal or have language problems to communicate their needs and feelings with less difficulty. They can also be personalised for individual children and used across a range of learning and social settings. When this appeal was presented to the committee, we agreed to buy the seven boards that were needed for the total price of £2,400. The boards have since been installed and are being put to very good use by the children who will benefit enormously from them.

Operations Manager Sarah Jones wrote to us saying: “We are so, so happy with our communication boards and they are already being accessed not just by our special needs pupils and those with English as an additional language, but by our whole school community. We are thrilled and so grateful to you for your support of this project and your very generous donation. We are truly delighted with the difference these boards are making, and we cannot thank you enough for helping to make this possible.”
Thanks are due to all our supporters who make this type of donation possible with their continued support and help.
