Fun Day at Covent Garden 2010

On Sunday 3rd October 2010 the LTFUC held their third annual ‘Fun Day’ at the Covent Garden Piazza.  The committee arrived at the Piazza at 8am and immediately set about the mammoth task of erecting the gazebos and here I must thank Sgt. Jack Warner of the City of London Police for his kindness and assistance in not only bringing his Police Range Rover for display, but also coming to our rescue with an extra gazebo and table.  This was a brilliant help and we are also grateful to him for the money he raised on our behalf during the day.

We also thank Alf Townsend for coming along to sell signed copies of his book, with 10% of the book sales going towards our charity.  Much appreciation also goes to the four members of the Furry Tail Folk, wonderful characters who did a brilliant job entertaining the children all afternoon and raising money for us.  We are also grateful to Mark Cooper of the London Vintage Taxi Association, who brought a Vintage cab along and, with the help of Hazel Westbury, did a great job collecting funds on our behalf and we thank them and Doug Cheshire for making this possible.

We appreciate Doreen Golding, the Pearly Queen of the Old Kent Road and Harry Mayhead, the Pearly King of Bow Bells coming to join us and we are also grateful to Miss Ballooniverse for providing us with balloon ‘Elvis’ which attracted a lot of attention and laughs.  Sincere thanks also go to Cathy and the girls at Costco in Chingford and to Beryl Bloomfield for their donation of the tombola/raffle prizes and to Michelle for supplying the jewellery and belts to sell.

Many thanks go to the drivers who came along to give us their support and, in particular, driver Darren Parr and his lovely wife Jackie who had walked many miles to reach us as part of their training to climb the Inca Trail ruins to Machu Picchu in Peru and we wish them good luck for their trip.  One of our team was celebrating his birthday that day and before leaving we set up a table in the piazza and took the opportunity to relax and enjoy some celebration cake and drink, although we did attract some strange glances! As it was his last event as Hon. Chairman, David Lessman took the opportunity to thank all the committee for their help and support and the Committee in turn would like to thank David for an excellent job well done for the past six years.

Although the weather was not on our side, we still managed to have a fun day and we would like to extend our grateful thanks to Covent Garden Management for enabling us to be at the Piazza, making many more people aware of our charity and the work we do.
